Privacy policy

What we collect

When you use the website or app, limited technical information may be recorded, including your IP address, the content requested, the date and time, and your browser or device type.

We use this information to provide and secure our services and diagnose technical problems. We also use it to understand overall readership, such as which pages are viewed and the general device types and locations of readers. This is done without cookies, in aggregate, and is not used to identify individual readers.

If you turn on app notifications, we store a notification token and limited technical information needed to deliver alerts. We do not connect this with your name, email address or reading history.

If you email us, we receive your email address and any information you provide.

If you make a contribution, your payment is processed by Stripe, a third-party payment provider. You enter your card details with Stripe, and Hawke's Bay News does not receive or store your full card number. Stripe makes your name, email address, contribution amount and payment history available to us so we can manage contributions, send receipts and answer questions about them. Stripe’s own privacy policy also applies.

Advertising and external content

We may count the total number of times an advertisement is displayed or clicked. These are overall totals and are not used to identify individual readers.

We do not use tracking cookies to build reader profiles or deliver personalised advertising.

If you follow an external link or interact with content provided by another service, that provider’s privacy policy may apply.

How information is handled

We use service providers to operate our website, app, storage and notifications. They may process limited information on our behalf and are required to protect it consistently with this policy and applicable privacy law.

Some information may be processed outside New Zealand. Where that happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure it remains appropriately protected.

We may also disclose information where required or permitted by law.

We retain information only for as long as reasonably necessary or as required or permitted by law. Some correspondence and submitted material may be kept as part of our editorial archive.

We take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold against loss, misuse, unauthorised access or disclosure.

Your choices and rights

Notifications are optional and can be turned off through the app or your device settings.

Under the Privacy Act 2020, you may ask to access or correct personal information we hold about you. You may also request deletion of information associated with your device.

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled a privacy matter, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.

Changes to this policy

We will update this policy if the way we handle personal information changes.
